Animal Husbandry
Overview
SEVA’s Animal Husbandry initiatives focus on supporting livestock farmers in rural and Tribal areas of Eluru District (formerly part of West Godavari) through health care, disease management, entrepreneurship development, and supplementary income generation. These programs address animal welfare, productivity enhancement, and economic empowerment for small and marginal farmers, particularly women and marginalized communities, by integrating veterinary services with government schemes and corporate partnerships.
Project Overview
Highlights
In West Godavari and surrounding regions, livestock farming (buffaloes, cows, sheep, goats, and poultry) serves as a vital supplementary income source for farming families. SEVA collaborates with the Department of Animal Husbandry, local veterinary services, and partners like Godrej Agrovet Limited (GAVL) to deliver free veterinary health camps, technical trainings, and equipment distribution. Key efforts include preventive healthcare, deworming, nutritional support, and promotion of integrated enterprises like poultry and fisheries.
The project aligns with Andhra Pradesh’s strong livestock sector (high pedigree bovine population, focus on breed improvement via Artificial Insemination, and schemes like YSR Pasu Bhima Padakam for animal insurance/compensation). SEVA emphasizes timely treatment, clean practices, and awareness on government subsidies for dairy, poultry, and goat units.
Objectives
- Provide free veterinary care and medicines to improve animal health and productivity.
- Train entrepreneurs in poultry hatching and management for self-employment.
- Raise awareness on disease prevention, nutrition, and livestock schemes.
- Support supplementary income for poor farmers through healthy herds and micro-enterprises.
- Promote integrated approaches (e.g., poultry with fisheries) for sustainable livelihoods.
