Irrigation

Overview

Irrigation Project SEVA’s Irrigation initiatives focus on enhancing water availability, improving irrigation efficiency, and boosting agricultural productivity for small and marginal farmers in Krishna and West Godabari Districts (old districts), Andhra Pradesh. Through rehabilitation of minor irrigation tanks, community mobilization, and integration with sustainable farming practices, SEVA supports climate-resilient agriculture, particularly for Tribal and marginalized farmers reliant on rainfed and tank systems.

Project Overview

Highlights

Project Overview West Godavari/Krishna regions benefit from the Godavari canal system, but many minor tanks suffer from siltation, poor maintenance, and reduced storage capacity, affecting crop yields in drought-prone and upland areas. SEVA plays a key role in the Andhra Pradesh Integrated Irrigation and Agriculture Transformation Project (APIIATP), a World Bank-supported initiative to revive and restore minor irrigation tanks using the Sustainable Minor Irrigation Project (SMIP) approach. The project aims to enhance productivity, profitability, and resilience to climate variability for small/marginal farmers, Water User Associations (WUAs), and Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs). SEVA has been actively involved in tank renovations, with World Bank team visits highlighting progress in areas like URA Tank.

Objectives

  • Restore and modernize minor irrigation tanks in 21 Mandals to increase water storage and equitable distribution.
  • Improve agricultural productivity and farmer incomes through better irrigation access.
  • Build community capacities via WUAs and FPOs for sustainable water management.
  • Promote climate-resilient practices integrated with crops like paddy, maize, pulses, and horticulture.
  • Support small and marginal farmers, including Tribal communities, in 8+ mandals.

    Key Activities

    Programs

    1. Andhra Pradesh Integrated Irrigation and Agriculture Transformation Project (APIIATP)
        • SEVA is implementing tank rehabilitation in 41 tanks, benefiting 6,300 farmers.
        • Focuses on desilting, bund strengthening, sluice repairs, and command area development.
        • World Bank team visits documented progress, including site inspections and interactions with farmers and local stakeholders.
        • Integrated with FPO promotion: Farmers access improved irrigation for crops like fruits, vegetables, cashew, acid lemon, maize, mirchi, paddy, and pulses.
        • Complements broader state irrigation efforts, such as Godavari canal modernization and minor tank revival under SMIP.
      1. Support for Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) in Irrigation
        • Promoted 9 FPOs (including 8 in earlier phases covering 69 villages across 8 mandals in West Godavari and Krishna Districts).
        • 1,400 Tribal farmers and 2,100 other farmers benefit from enhanced irrigation access, market linkages, and input subsidies.
        • FPOs facilitate seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and government subsidies, with capacities built through NABARD support.
        • Activities include Navadhanyalu kit distribution for diversified cropping under improved tank systems.

    Impact & Expected Outcomes

    Expected

    • Enhanced irrigation potential for thousands of acres, leading to higher yields and income stability.
    • Direct benefits to 6,300+ farmers through 41 renovated tanks.
    • Strengthened FPOs for better market access and input support.
    • Climate resilience: Reduced dependency on erratic rainfall, promotion of efficient water use.
    • Contribution to Andhra Pradesh’s irrigation goals, including minor tank revival and Godavari basin development.
